Man shot, killed after advancing on sheriff’s deputy with machete in south Sacramento
A man was shot and killed Wednesday after threatening a deputy with a machete at a home in the Fruitridge Pocket neighborhood of south Sacramento.
About 8:40 a.m., deputies were called to a home in the 5400 block of Enrico Boulevard just north of Fruitridge Road for reports of a suicidal man, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman. The man’s wife had called 911 saying that her husband was suicidal and had a machete in his hands.
According to a sheriff’s news release, when a deputy arrived at the home, the wife was standing in the front yard and the man was on the front porch holding a machete. The man then “advanced” towards his wife and the deputy, said Lt. Rod Grassmann.
Sheriff’s officials said the deputy pushed the wife out of the path of the man and attempted to retreat while commanding him to drop the raised machete. Once the deputy was backed up to a fence and the man continued to advance and ignore commands, the deputy responded by shooting the man multiple times, according to the news release.
Grassmann said the deputy rendered aid until fire personnel arrived. The man was taken by ambulance to a hospital but died of his wounds.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the man on Friday as 55-year-old Jaime Naranjo Bautista.
Grassmann confirmed that the deputy was not injured, and he said that body camera footage of the incident would be made available in the coming days.
According to the news release, the man’s wife told 911 her husband did not have a mental health condition or take medications for mental health and that he did not have a history of violence towards anyone, including law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation into the officer-involved shooting, he said. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Inspector General will provide an independent review as well.
