A man died after suffering an apparent medical emergency while in the custody of Roseville police late last month, authorities announced Monday.

Officers shortly after 2 p.m. on Sept. 28 responded to a 911 call reporting auto parts being stolen near the 2700 block of Vista Grande Boulevard, the Roseville Police Department said in a news release.

Police located a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description, pulled it over and detained the driver, according to the news release.

The officers then “recognized the detained suspect may be experiencing a medical issue and called for an ambulance to provide care,” police wrote.

The man was then taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he died, according to the Police Department, which has not released the man’s identity.

An initial autopsy has been performed, but the official cause of the man’s death has not been determined by the coroner’s unit of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, according to the news release.

Police said the detained man was believed to be under the influence of meth.

“Based on the initial investigation, it’s believed the deceased ingested an unknown amount of methamphetamine as officers pulled over his vehicle,” police wrote. Authorities are awaiting further toxicology reports.

The Police Department said it is investigating the incident jointly with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office.
