UC Davis police investigate campus crime spree after mailroom burglary and vehicle break-ins

Police this week were investigating three campus burglaries at the University of California, Davis including a school vehicle that was hotwired and driven a short distance before it was left behind.

The first burglary occurred between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Saturday at a residence near Tilia Street and North Sage Street also in the West Village area. The burglary was reported to police about 8:15 p.m. Monday.

Police said a suspect or suspects broke into the home through an unlocked front door and stole items while a roommate was sleeping inside their room. A wallet, shoes and some food were stolen from the common area, and an iPad was taken from an unoccupied room. No suspects have been identified.

The second burglary occurred about 3:30 a.m. Monday at The Green campus student housing complex mail room on Tilia Street in the West Village neighborhood. The burglary at the complex was captured on security cameras. Two suspects pried open a door to the secured package room, according to the UC Davis Police Department.

Police said the suspects opened various packages and stole the items inside. The security camera video provided suspect descriptions, but officers have been unable to identify the suspects. The suspects’ heads and faces were covered during the burglary.

Police described one suspect as a man wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, white-and-black flannel shirt over a black hooded-sweatshirt, black shorts, black socks and white-and-black checkered shoes. The suspect also had a blue-and-black backpack.

The other suspect in the mailroom burglary was described as a man wearing a light-gray hooded-sweatshirt with an emblem on the front over an orange T-shirt, dark-gray shorts and gray Adidas shoes with red laces. Police said he also had a black backpack.

The third burglary occurred early Tuesday at a fenced UC Davis vehicle parking lot in the 600 block of Hopkins Road. Police said a suspect or suspects entered the fenced lot and broke into UC Davis vehicles, stealing tools and service equipment. One of the vehicles was hotwired and driven to the lot’s entrance where it was left at the scene. No suspects have been identified.

Investigators asked anyone with information about these burglaries to call the UC Davis Police Department at 530-752-1727.
