No suspects in deadly parking lot shooting outside Sacramento high school football game
As Sacramento police continue to investigate a shooting that left a man dead in the parking lot of Grant Union High School during a football game last week, the campus is readying for another home contest this Friday.
A man in his mid-20s was shot and wounded during a disturbance involving about 20 people that broke out in the parking lot toward the end of last week’s game between Grant and Monterey Trail, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
The victim was transported by a private vehicle to a hospital, where he died of his gunshot injury, according to a department news release. He has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Alfred Ayodele Myah, 24, of Sacramento.
The shooter fled the scene and remains outstanding. No suspect description or other updates on the investigation were available as of Monday, a department spokesperson said.
“We wholeheartedly believe that the most important thing that all of us can do right now is to build a stronger sense of community in order to provide a safe environment for all,” Grant officials said in a Saturday morning statement posted to the school’s website. “This is something we must work harder on, together.”
Speaking to reporters shortly after midnight Friday, Police Department spokesman Sgt. Zach Eaton said no students were believed to have been involved in last Friday’s disturbance or shooting. School district officials in their statement also said no students were involved, and noted that there was “no interruption to the football game as no one attending seemed to be aware of the incident.”
Grant is slated for another home game this week, hosting Laguna Creek on Friday. A Twin Rivers Unified School District spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday regarding whether there would be extra security at the school. There were 11 Twin Rivers officers at the game at the time of the shooting.
The Grant campus is located in the 1400 block of Grand Avenue, in Sacramento’s Del Paso Heights neighborhood. Friday’s shooting happened in a parking lot on the north side of campus.
Eaton said a firearm was recovered at the scene of the homicide, which marked the 50th for the city this year. Officers responding to the scene just after midnight located bullet casings. Gunfire struck at least one vehicle in the parking lot.
About 2,000 people were at last week’s game.
