Man in custody after domestic violence call turns to hours-long standoff in Carmichael

Police tape at crime scene

A man was taken into custody in Carmichael following an alleged domestic violence incident, after he and his girlfriend refused to answer the door for sheriff’s deputies for several hours early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Law enforcement officials received a call around 1:30 a.m. regarding an incident on Locust Avenue, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi said.

A woman initially told deputies that a man and two women were inside the residence when some kind of dispute and altercation erupted, Gandhi said.

One of the women managed to leave the home and contacted authorities. The man and the remaining woman, his girlfriend, then refused to answer the door for responding deputies, Gandhi said.

“We were confident that they both were safe, so we didn’t have a hostage situation,” Gandhi said.

But deputies could not leave the scene until they exited the home so that a welfare check could be completed, he said.

Both people eventually exited the residence around 8 a.m.

Later Thursday morning, Gandhi said that the woman who first reported the domestic incident later recanted parts of her statement. As a result, the man is no longer under arrest for domestic violence, Gandhi said, but he remains in custody on a separate felony warrant. His identity was not immediately released.

The man’s girlfriend was not arrested, Gandhi said.

The incident led to a brief shelter-in-place order for nearby Cameron Ranch Elementary, San Juan Unified School District said on its website. The precautionary order was lifted at 8:10 a.m.
