Woman killed after man suspected of DUI hits tree along a Northern California highway

Roadway fatality

A woman and a dog were killed and a driver arrested in a suspected DUI crash Sunday afternoon in Northern California, authorities said.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 3:15 p.m. on southbound Highway 49, near McKnight Way in Grass Valley, the California Highway Patrol’s Grass Valley office said in a news release.

A 1996 Subaru Legacy was found overturned with a male driver and female passenger trapped in the wreckage, CHP officials wrote. The dog was found dead in the Subaru.

Emergency crews extricated the man and woman, who were airlifted to a hospital in Roseville.

The passenger, a 36-year-old Grass Valley woman, died at the hospital, according to the CHP. Her identity has not been released by coroner’s officials, pending notification of family.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old Brian Fogel, also of Grass Valley, remains at a hospital and is being treated for major injuries, CHP officials said.

Fogel was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, and he remains in custody pending medical treatment.

Investigators determined the Subaru struck a pine tree west of Highway 49. The deadly crash remains under investigation.
