Man arrested after coworker ‘feud’ turns to deadly shootout at Stockton Boulevard apartment

Police tape at crime scene

Detectives have arrested a man on suspicion of homicide after two men shot each other Thursday morning at a south Sacramento apartment complex following an altercation, leaving the resident of the apartment unit dead, sheriff’s officials said.

The two men appear to have been acquaintances who got into “some sort of argument” inside an apartment unit in the 7400 block of Stockton Boulevard, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi said. The argument ended with the two men shooting each other, Gandhi said.

Investigators determined the two men were coworkers involved in an “ongoing feud,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday morning announcing the arrest of the surviving man, 49-year-old Julian Brooks.

The 56-year-old victim who lived in the apartment was shot several times in the chest and was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries later Thursday morning, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Brooks allegedly broke into the victim’s apartment, instigated a fight with him and shot him, authorities said.

The victim returned fire with his own handgun, which he legally owned, according to the news release. Brooks suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the neck during the exchange of gunfire.

Brooks was arrested and booked Thursday night into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a homicide charge following his release from the hospital. He is ineligible for bail and due to appear in Sacramento Superior Court on Monday.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
