Shooting victim found on west steps of California’s Capitol. Sacramento police investigating

Police tape at crime scene

Sacramento police officers are investigating a downtown shooting after a person with a gunshot wound was found Monday morning on the west steps of the California state Capitol.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of 10th Street just after 4 a.m. for reports of a shooting, said Officer Cody Tapley, a department spokesman. When they arrived, officers located a victim two blocks south on the west steps suffering from one gunshot wound.

Sacramento Fire Department medics transported the person to a hospital with wounds not considered life-threatening.

Tapley said officers determined that the shooting likely occurred on Capitol Mall between Third and Fifth streets and that the victim had hailed a California Highway Patrol officer on 10th Street before making their way to the Capitol.

The investigation into the shooting remained ongoing, police said, and no suspects have been identified.
