Man killed in shooting after large fight in North Highlands, Sacramento sheriff says

A man was killed in a shooting Wednesday afternoon after a large fight reportedly involving about 30 people escalated to gunfire on the street in a North Highlands residential neighborhood.

About 1:15 p.m., the large fight was reported in front of a home in the 5600 block of Georgia Drive, just north of A Street. Soon after, callers reported the fight had led to gunfire, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Gandhi said one man was stuck by gunfire and taken by someone else to a hospital before deputies arrived. The man was later pronounced dead. No other gunshot victims were reported.

There was no further information available about the shooting victim. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release his name after his family has been notified.

There was some belief a suspect was still in the area, possibly in one of a few nearby homes, officials said. Sheriff’s SWAT team members were called to the scene. Gandhi said residents in a those nearby homes were evacuated. Authorities searched the area, but they did not find a suspect.

“Right now, we don’t have much as far as suspect description,” Gandhi told reporters. “We don’t have really much else.”

At 4:30 p.m., that portion of Georgia Drive remained closed to vehicle traffic. Those evacuated were allowed to return home. Gandhi said homicide detectives were questioning some witnesses at the scene, presumably some who were involved in the fight. He said a homicide investigation involving so many people can present some challenges.

“It’s a big challenge, not only the patrol deputies who got to corral everything they can to preserve what they can,” Gandhi said, “but now the detectives have to backtrack and, of course, retrace everything that happen from the minute it started until now.”
