Grant High School in Del Paso Heights was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after Sacramento police received a report of a shooting near the school.
Police said gunshots were reported in the 3400 block of High Street. No one was injured and the suspects fled, said police spokeswoman Officer Traci Trapani.
The school was locked down as a precaution while officers searched for the suspects.
Lt. David Lugo of the Twin Rivers District Police Department, said the campus lockdown began at 1:50 p.m. and lasted less than 20 minutes. He said summer school classes had already been dismissed for the day. Football players were arriving for practice and staff members were on campus, but Lugo said the brief lockdown did not interfere with their activities.
