Sacramento County sheriff honors horse who had a life with ‘resilience and compassion’

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is remembering a horse who died after a long career serving the community, heralding the equine’s life as one of “resilience and compassion.”

The cause and date of death for Sam was not disclosed. A member of the Sheriff’s Office Mounted Unit, Sam went to parades, memorials, school functions and participated in funerals.

His owner, Lt. Christie Lynn, had saved Sam in 1994 from a severe leg injury threatening his life, according to the Sheriff’s Office. After healing, Sam became a member of the Mounted Unit and served until retiring in 2009.

“Following his retirement from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit, Sam enjoyed a well-deserved chapter of relaxation, spending cherished moments with his family in his backyard pasture.”
