Rio Linda carjacking suspect arrested after hourslong standoff that forced resident to flee home
Sacramento County sheriff’s SWAT deputies, after more than three hours of negotiating, arrested a suspect holed up in a Rio Linda residence Wednesday after he allegedly stole a car from a woman.
Deputies arrived about 11 a.m. to the 6800 block of 18th Street for reports of an unrelated trespassing and saw the carjacking unfold, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesman with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
An updated news release said a 23-year-old man tried to stab a woman with a screwdriver while trying to take her vehicle. He tried to pull her inside the vehicle, but the woman managed to escape and the suspect drove away, deputies said.
The man also allegedly drove toward the sheriff’s deputy, who fired one shot at him before moving out of the vehicle’s path, the news release said. It’s unknown if the suspect was hit.
Deputies began pursuing the suspect, who lost control of the vehicle, hit a center median and then crashed into an oncoming resident’s car, the release said.
The suspect fled into a home while forcing the resident inside to leave, Gandhi added.
The homeowner and motorist suffered minor injuries and were not taken to a hospital, Gandhi said.
SWAT deputies remained at the scene Wednesday afternoon and worked for hours to speak with the suspect inside the home, he said.
The man was arrested about 3:15 p.m. by deputies after leaving the home with a firearm. Deputies fired less lethal rounds and used a K-9 to apprehend him, Gandhi said. The suspect suffered minor injuries after a K-9 officer bit him during the apprehension, Gandhi said.
The suspect faces six felonies, including suspicion of carjacking, inflicting great bodily injuries upon a peace officer, carrying a loaded firearm, evading police in a reckless manner and evading a peace officer by driving in the opposite flow of traffic and unlawfully taking a firearm. He also faces an allegation of hit and run causing property damage, a misdemeanor.
He’s held on no bail and is scheduled for his first court appearance on Friday.
