Police alerted Child Protective Services after motel employees found a 3-year-old boy alone in one of the facility’s rooms Friday evening.
Motel employees contacted police and reported an incident of possible child neglect after discovering the boy alone in the room around 11 p.m., Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Officer Traci Trapani said. The room was in a motel in the 7800 block of College Town Drive. A Motel 6 appears to be the only motel on that block.
The child’s mother had left him in the care of her boyfriend, Trapani said. The boyfriend said he was locked out of the room.
CPS will investigate and decide if action against the child’s mother is warranted.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the sex of the child found by motel workers. He is a 3-year-old boy. Also, the name of the police spokeswoman was misspelled. The correct spelling is Traci Trapani.
