Sacramento deputies arrest suspect accused of beating man to death at Rancho Cordova gas station

Homicide investigation

The Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies arrested a suspect Sunday in connection to the beating death of an elderly victim at a Rancho Cordova gas station, according to a spokesman.

Deputies were called about 10:15 p.m. for a report of an assault at an Arco gas station on the 2800 block of Zinfandel Drive, said Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Two homeless men began fighting outside the station for unknown reasons. The victim, described as a man in his 70s, was reported as lying on the ground with injuries and wasn’t breathing when deputies arrived.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene; his identity is expected to be released by the Coroner’s Office.

Anthony James Cervantes, 38, faces a murder charge and is being held without bail at downtown Sacramento County Main Jail. He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.
