Man struck in midtown Sacramento hit-and-run dies from his injuries, police say

Police tape at crime scene

A man who was struck in a midtown Sacramento hit-and-run May 31 has died of his injuries, police said in an update, as the driver suspected of hitting him with his car makes his first appearance in Sacramento Superior Court.

The hit-and-run involving the pedestrian was reported shortly before 1 a.m. on 16th Street, between V and U streets, just north of the Highway 50 portion of the Capital City Freeway.

Officer Cody Tapley, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman, said officers arrived at the scene and found a man who had suffered serious injuries. On June 4, police announced that the man had “succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.”

His identity is expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Tapley said the driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian drove away before officers arrived. He said investigators did not have any suspect description to release.

On Friday night, police announced the arrest of Joe Earl Johnson, 41, of Sacramento in connection with the crash after detectives “positively identified the suspect vehicle,” Tapley said.

Johnson remains in custody in the Sacramento County Main Jail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on one count of felony hit-and-run with injury.

He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
