Homeless woman dies from stab wound near Sacramento’s Loaves and Fishes, police say
Sacramento homicide detectives are investigating a woman’s death Tuesday morning after she was found unresponsive near the Loaves and Fishes homeless services center in the River District. The landmark facility closed for the day following the early morning death.
According to police spokesman Officer Anthony Gamble, officers were dispatched about 6:10 a.m. to the 1300 block of North C Street for a report of a fight. Near Loaves & Fishes, paramedics and officers found a woman who was unresponsive with at least one puncture wound, Gamble said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Due to the circumstances, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators have responded to take over the investigation,” Gamble said. “We do not have anyone in custody at this time.”
Loaves and Fishes issued a statement Tuesday saying that it had closed the facility for the “first time in 41 years” following the woman’s death. They declined to give details about the altercation or whether it was on the grounds of the homeless services facility.
“What we can say is that this guest is known, & loved throughout our campus community,” Loaves and Fishes officials said. “She was a regular at Maryhouse, Friendship Park, & our Dining Room. It is here that she was seen & heard; we laughed & cried with her more times than we can count.”
“She will be missed,” they said, adding that more support for the city’s unhoused was needed and that their facilities would reopen Wednesday.
Officers encouraged anyone with information about the homicide to call police at 916-808-5471.
