Explosion destroys mailbox in north Sacramento County; pieces of explosive device found

Sheriff’s officials on Thursday night responded to a report of an explosion in north Sacramento County and found a destroyed parcel mailbox and pieces of an explosive device.

The explosion occurred at a community mailbox in the 8800 block of Redwater Drive in a residential neighborhood near Antelope. Patrol deputies responded to the reported explosion and found the destroyed parcel box, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene and conducted a post-blast investigation. Sheriff’s officials said they collected pieces of the explosive device as evidence, along with portions of the destroyed box.

The Sheriff’s Office submitted evidence and information about the explosion to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for further investigation.
