Man shot, wounded by officer after trying to flee police in North Sacramento industrial park

Police shot and wounded a man Saturday afternoon in North Sacramento after he attempted to flee from officers trying to detain him in the city’s Raley Industrial Park district, the city’s first officer-involved shooting this year.

According to a news release from the Sacramento Police Department, the incident began about 4:30 p.m. when officers observed a suspicious vehicle with a suspended registration near Beloit Drive and Bell Avenue. The police reported that Santino Marez, 39, of Sacramento abandoned the car before officers were able to make contact with him.

Officers found Marez hiding on the roof of a nearby RV. Police made verbal contact with the man before he jumped down and attempted to flee. While attempting to detain Marez, police said an officer shot him. Authorities did not offer specifics about what led the officer to discharge his or her service weapon or whether the man had a weapon on Saturday.

Marez was transported to a hospital and was treated for his injuries. An officer involved in the incident suffered minor injuries, though the nature of the injuries was unknown.

After he was released from the hospital, Marez was booked into jail for use of violence or force to prevent an officer from performing duties and a warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm, said spokesman Officer Anthony Gamble. No weapon was found on Marez at the time of the shooting, he said.

This was first officer-involved shooting by the department in 2024. In April, Sacramento officers were following up on a homicide investigation in Oakland and were present when Oakland officers fired on and killed a man. He was later identified as Dominique Broadt. However, Sacramento police did not say whether Broadt was the suspect sought after a woman was killed on the 6100 block of Ventura Street in March.

There were four officer-involved shootings by officers on the city’s force last year, down from six in 2022.

In September 2023, a man was killed by SWAT officers after he pointed a gun at them during a standoff at a Downtown Commons parking garage. In August 2023, a man aboard an RT train outside Sacramento City College was shot and killed after he advanced on officers with a knife. In May 2023, a woman was killed after she pointed a pellet gun at two officers in midtown following several disturbance calls. In February 2023, a North Sacramento carjacking suspect was wounded by officers after he struck an officer with a vehicle trying to drive away.

In line with department policy, the officer involved in Saturday’s shooting was placed on critical incident leave.

This incident is being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department’s Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division and Professional Standards Unit, the department said in the news release. “The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are providing oversight by monitoring the investigation.”

Police were also expected to release video from body-worn and patrol car cameras, as mandated by the City Council’s policy on police use of force and Senate Bill 1421, which requires disclosure of police records pertaining to incident of great bodily injury within 30 day of an incident.
