A Fresno police sergeant was arrested Wednesday as part of a sweeping undercover operation conducted by the Roseville Police Department in which deputies posed as children online and spoke with suspects on messaging apps who allegedly sought to commit lewd acts with minors, authorities said.

Sgt. Paige McQuay, 56, was arrested on suspicion of attempted lewd acts with a minor and attempting to contacting a minor to commit an offense after a warrant was issued Wednesday for his arrest, Lt. Chris Ciampa, a spokesman with the Roseville Police Department, said in a news release.

Ciampa also said investigators arrested more suspects throughout the undercover operation. Details including the total number of arrests and when the operation was conducted were not immediately available.

McQuay, who is being held without bail in Fresno County Jail, worked with the Fresno Police Department since December 1993. He was placed on paid leave from the department, Ciampa said.

Ciampa also said McQuay will very likely be extradited to Placer County to face charges. But McQuay was not in Roseville when the alleged crime occurred.

The Fresno Police Department is cooperating with the Roseville Police Department, Ciampa said.
