A Citrus Heights man is in custody after he was shot by police during a two-hour long standoff atop a Sunrise Boulevard senior living facility late Monday.

Citrus Heights police say the 41-year-old man climbed to the facility’s roof about 7:45 p.m., holding officers at bay from the facility’s rooftop with a replica handgun and threats that he would detonate an explosive. Officers opened fire when police said the man pointed a weapon at them. The man was wounded and dropped the gun, police said in a news release, but managed to stay on the building’s roof.

By 10:15 p.m., police crisis negotiators and a SWAT team coaxed him off of the roof, the officers using less-lethal rounds and a police dog to subdue the man. Citrus Heights police later described the man’s wounds, including a dog bite, as not life-threatening.

The three officers who opened fire are on paid administrative leave while the Citrus Heights Police Department, Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and Sacramento County Crime Lab investigate.

No other injuries were reported.

Citrus Heights police arrested the man on suspicion of armed robbery, domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon and exhibiting a deadly weapon. Police on Tuesday said the man was on state parole for a burglary conviction and on Sacramento County probation for possession of controlled substances and burglary tools.

He was being held without bail on the parole violation and assorted charges Tuesday at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.

The ordeal began Monday afternoon. Citrus Heights police were called to a home in the 7500 block of Tiara Way just before 4:40 p.m., where a woman told officers her boyfriend had assaulted and threatened her with a knife, police said in a statement. Officers could not find the man, but he surfaced some three hours later.

Witnesses spotted the man on nearby Sunrise Boulevard about 7:45 p.m. Officers gave chase before the man fled through the senior center and made his way to the building’s roof, authorities said.
