California inmate’s attack on prison guard being investigated as attempted homicide

Bars from a jail cell frame a door being locked.

An inmate’s attack on a corrections officer Thursday at a Northern California prison is being investigated as an attempted homicide.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials say Kevin Alvarado was being taken from the shower to his cell at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione about 6:21 p.m. when he turned on the guard. Guards restrained Alvarado, medical staffers were called and the guard was taken to an outside hospital where he was treated and released. Prison officers later recovered what was described as an “inmate-manufactured weapon” at the scene.

Alvarado, 30, is five years into a life term for second-degree murder following his 2019 sentencing in Los Angeles County. In 2021, a Kern County judge tacked four additional years onto his sentence for charges of assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon and manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, according to state corrections officials.

Alvarado is now being confined in restrictive housing while correctional officials investigate Thursday’s incident. The case will be turned over to the Amador County District Attorney’s Office for felony prosecution.

The Mule Creek facility houses more than 3,800 minimum-, medium- and maximum-security prisoners.
