Dead body found in bedroom at Sacramento County affordable housing complex, Metro Fire says
Firefighters called Monday to extinguish flames at a Citrus Heights apartment found a dead body, prompting police to investigate.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters were alerted about 9 a.m. to a fire at an affordable housing complex on the 6200 block of Mariposa Avenue. The 25-unit apartment complex is owned by the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, according to the city of Citrus Heights.
Smoke surrounded crews as they breached the apartment. But firefighters didn’t find any active fire, said Battalion Chief Parker Wilbourn, a spokesman for Metro Fire.
A person was found dead, lying on a bed, with the burnt remnants of a blanket and other small items, Wilbourn said. Flames appeared to be contained to the bedroom but there was smoke damage throughout the unit, he said.
Wilbourn said it was immediately unknown how the person died. The cause of the fire is undetermined, he said.
The Citrus Heights Police Department is investigating the incident.
