British band allegedly robbed at gunpoint at Bay Area gas station driving to Sacramento show

British alternative rock band Sports Team said it was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024, in Vallejo while driving to Sacramento to play a show.

A British alternative rock band was robbed Tuesday morning in broad daylight while driving to Sacramento for a performance at a midtown bar, according to the band.

Sports Team, a six-member band based in London, said they stopped about 9 a.m. at Starbucks in Vallejo for coffee and gas, the band said in a social media post. The musicians were scheduled to play a show Monday in San Francisco at a bar called Kilowatt, according to the venue, as part of the band’s West Coast tour.

A person smashed the back window of a van, and a person in a black hoodie style sweatshirt then grabbed items from a van and placed them inside a dark-colored car, according to the post, which included a video.

A witness ran to inform the band, and members tried to stop the robbery, the post said. But the suspects began yelling and pulled out a gun, the band wrote.

“Get down,” a band member yelled to a woman traveling with them, according to the video. “Ring the police, ring the police!”

The suspects stole passports, personal documents and suitcases with their clothes, the BBC reported.

But the thieves did not steal the band’s instruments, paving the way for Sports Team to continue with their scheduled show at the Goldfield Trading Post, a bar and entertainment venue at 1630 J St. in midtown Sacramento. Doors were set to open at 7 p.m. for an 8 p.m. show.

“They can take our Nintendo Switches but they can never take our ability to play rock songs about motorways,” the post said.

Band members said they called police but were told to file an online report.

“In all seriousness pretty shocking how resigned everyone seemed to be to it,” the band said.

The Vallejo Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the incident.
