A 14-year-old aboard an electric bicycle led Folsom officers on a dangerous hour-long chase Sunday night before finally being taken into custody, Folsom police said Monday.

Folsom police booked the teen into Sacramento County juvenile custody Sunday on suspicion of felony evading and felony vandalism. Police officials say the 6 p.m. chase stemmed from an “ongoing felony vandalism and hate crime investigation” involving juveniles riding electric bicycles.

The chase reached speeds of up to 60 mph as the young rider popped wheelies and weaved into opposite traffic lanes while gesturing at officers, said police officials.

Folsom Police Department video posted to the agency’s Facebook page shows a portion of the pursuit, the e-bike’s rider putting distance between himself and the pursuing patrol car.

A number of police cruisers joined the chase, the pursuit made more dangerous as the cyclist drove into oncoming traffic with the bicycle’s headlamps turned off.

Folsom police said officers cut off their pursuit several times during the approximately hour-long incident out of safety concerns, before eventually arresting the teen.
