An all-day hunt for a mountain lion ended safely Sunday for Folsom residents when the big cat was shot with a tranquilizer gun.

Folsom police said on Facebook that the “big kitty” had been found and hit with a tranquilizer dart after a day of rumors about the mountain lion roaming through town. Police said the first report about the mountain lion was received in the morning when it was spotted on Fargo Way.

Another call came in about 7 p.m. from not far away at Montrose Drive and School Street. Officers and representatives from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife converged on the neighborhood.

During the search, residents were advised to stay inside. Police and wildlife game wardens searched for a couple of hours before finding the cougar in a backyard.

Wildlife game wardens were able to tranquilize the mountain lion about 10:20 p.m. He was then “taken into custody,” according to police.
