I-5 road rage murderer faces life in prison for Sacramento freeway shooting, DA says
A man has been convicted of murdering a retired correctional officer in a 2021 road rage incident on Interstate 5 and faces a possible life sentence in prison, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced this week.
David Perry, 36, was arrested and booked into Sacramento Main Jail after the incident on Dec. 6, 2021, in which authorities said he shot Lufino Reyes Mejorado multiple times leading to his death.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Perry and Mejorado had an interaction in their vehicles on Watt Avenue near Interstate 80, leading to Perry pursuing Mejorado, who attempted to flee on I-80 and I-5 while calling 911. Perry pulled alongside Mejorado and fired a gun multiple times into his truck, hitting him in the arm and waist. Mejorado stayed on the phone with authorities while Perry circled back on I-5 and shot him in the head, the District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
Mejorado was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries soon after his arrival, authorities said.
It was Perry’s second known incident involving a firearm while driving, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The first came on Oct. 26, 2021, when Perry was accused of hitting another victim’s vehicle and attempting to flee. The victim followed Perry and reported his license plate number to authorities before Perry made a U-turn and fired six shots, hitting the victim in the face and the arm. That victim survived his injuries, authorities said.
A Sacramento Superior Court jury on Thursday found Perry guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder with the allegation he used a firearm to cause great bodily injury.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. His sentencing is scheduled for April 4.
