Man arrested after destructive Rancho Cordova church blaze to face Sacramento judge

Arson detectives have arrested a man they believe set a fire that gutted a Rancho Cordova church on Saturday.

Luis Fernando Marroquin, 29, will be arraigned Tuesday in Sacramento Superior Court. He was booked Saturday by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of felony arson, misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia and a felony violation of probation. He was being held without bail on the charges at Sacramento County Main Jail.

The blaze at the Casa Fuego de Dios Church in the 10000 block of Folsom Boulevard destroyed the church. Video of the fire showed flames tearing through the roof as well as the extent of the damage.

The blaze went quickly to a second alarm, said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District officials. No one was inside the church, whose title translated is House of the Fire of God, when it went up in flames.

Sheriff’s deputies were first called to the church about 2:45 a.m. Saturday for had been reported as a break-in. Deputies and Metro Fire personnel soon spotted smoke coming from the building and called in the second alarm. The church was lost, but fire crews were able to stop its spread to other buildings.

Leaders at Casa Fuego de Dios took to social media in the hours after the blaze to say their church was destroyed and that arson was suspected.
