Woman killed in Sacramento hit-and-run after vehicle struck her; police make arrest

Pedestrian fatality

Officers arrested a man suspected of driving under the influence of drugs in a deadly hit-and-run in which a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Wednesday night just north of downtown Sacramento.

The hit-and-run was reported shortly before 8 p.m. near the intersection of North B and Dos Rios streets in the River District, said Officer Anthony Gamble, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department.

Officers arrived at the scene and found an injured woman who had been hit by a vehicle while walking along North B Street, Gamble said. Medics arrived and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as 33-year-old Adrienne Keyana Johnson.

Gamble said a traffic officer who was on patrol downtown spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the suspected vehicle that drove away after hitting the pedestrian. Police then pulled over the vehicle near Fifth and I streets.

On Thursday morning, Gamble announced that the vehicle’s driver, a 62-year-old Sacramento man, was arrested as the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run.

The suspect was booked early Thursday at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He was arrested on the felony DUI charge, along with felony charges of hit-and-run causing a death and driving under the influence within 10 years of a previous felony conviction, jail records show.

His bail amount was set at $1 million. He’s scheduled to appear for his arraignment hearing Friday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.

Wednesday’s deadly hit-and-run was in the same area where a black sport utility vehicle jumped a curb last year and struck a tent along Dos Rios Street, seriously injuring three people. Nearby cameras captured the black SUV turn north from North 12th Street onto Dos Rios before hitting the tent on the sidewalk. A few days later, police arrested Jesus Banegas as the suspected driver in the hit-and-run.

A trial for Banegas, who pleaded not guilty, is expected to begin next month.
