Authorities name suspect involved in fatal shooting of Marysville police officer

The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday identified a man accused in Wednesday’s shooting that killed a Marysville police officer, the first on-duty death for the department in more than a century.

The coroner identified the suspect involved in the fatal shooting of Officer Osmar Rodarte as Rick David Oliver, 60, of Olivehurst, according to a Thursday news release from sheriff’s officials.

Rodarte, 30, took part in a widespread operation across Northern California aiming to crack down on transnational organization suspected of dealing methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Rodarte was shot in Olivehurst while executing a search warrant and died at Adventist Health and Rideout hospital in Marysville, authorities said. The suspect also died in the exchange of gunfire.

A second person involved in the incident was detained. He has not been identified.

Oliver’s home was among several places in Butte, Tehama, Yuba and Sutter counties where authorities executed search warrants Wednesday as part of the Northern California law enforcement operation, according to Thursday’s news release.

Rodarte, a two-year member of the Marysville Police Department, leaves behind a wife and at least one child. He served in the U.S. Army and graduated in 2022 from the Sacramento Police Department’s academy.

Memorial service details are pending. A procession Thursday beginning in Marysville allowed scores of Northern California residents to pay their respects to Rodarte as he was taken to a Placer County funeral home.
