Deputies arrested a man in the kidnapping of a woman walking Saturday night through a south Sacramento park was chased by someone she didn’t know, grabbed from behind and dragged through a nearby canal.

The incident was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday near Stockton Boulevard and Orange Avenue. Woody Hampton Park and Jack N. Sheldon Park are just west of that location. Authorities did not specify in which park the reported kidnapping occurred.

A caller reported the incident as an assault in progress, telling authorities a male was hitting, pushing, and dragging a woman on the street, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced early Sunday in social media posts.

Sheriff’s officials said deputies arrived at the scene and found a 40-year-old man who had his arm wrapped around a woman’s neck as he was trying to drag her through a nearby canal. The deputies successfully took man into custody and freed the woman without further incident.

The woman told deputies she had never seen the suspect before she spotted him as she walked through the park. Sheriff’s officials said the suspect initially went to grab her, but she was able to run away.

She told deputies the suspect chased her, grabbed her from behind and tore her dress partially off while wrapping his arms around her neck, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s officials said the suspect forcibly dragged the woman about 100 feet, before the deputies arrived and took him into custody. The woman did not suffer any physical injuries, authorities said.

The suspect was booked on a kidnapping charge at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He remained in custody Sunday morning with his bail set at $100,000 and is scheduled to appear for his arraignment Tuesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.
