Police tape at crime scene

Police in Elk Grove shot a man late Friday night after receiving reports of a person acting erratically and brandishing a gun at a popular fast food chain, resulting in the man being taken to a hospital, the Elk Grove Police Department said.

The man was inside the In-N-Out Burger on East Stockton Boulevard near Bond Road in Elk Grove, the Police Department said in a Saturday morning news release. Police arrived at roughly 11:15 p.m. and “coordinated efforts to detain the armed suspect away from nearby patrons,” police said. As officers approached, the suspect took off running toward the crowded parking lot and the drive-thru area.

One officer then shot the man, as police also deployed a K-9 unit to help apprehend him, the news release said. He was still holding the gun, which police said was loaded.

Officers described the suspect as a 50-year-old man. He was transported to a hospital where he’s expected to survive his injuries, according to the news release.

No officers or bystanders were injured, the news release said. Police will release the man’s identity once he is medically cleared and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges related to the incident.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, as per Elk Grove Police Department policy, according to the police news release. The officer-involved shooting incident will be reviewed by internally by the department, as well as by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
