Police say suspect in North Sacramento homicide found dead during traffic stop
Police say a suspect believed to be responsible for a fatal shooting in North Sacramento on Saturday was found dead hours later from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being stopped in a vehicle on a freeway.
Officers had responded just after 1:30 p.m. to an “incomplete call” on the 900 block of Arden Way in Old North Sacramento, according to Officer Allison Smith, a spokesperson with the Sacramento Police Department.
At the scene, officers found a woman with at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead. After detectives determined the case was a homicide, they obtained an arrest warrant for a suspect, police said in a news release Sunday.
About 9:30 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle linked to the shooting on eastbound Interstate 80 near Norwood Avenue, Smith said. During the stop, the suspect — one of several occupants in the vehicle — was found with an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not release the suspect’s name and it remained unclear whether any of the other occupants were detained.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the identities of the woman and the suspect after notifying family of their deaths.
The department said the homicide remains under investigation and are urging anyone with information to call officers at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
