A judge on Friday sentenced a man to 25 years to life in prison for the shooting death of a Sacramento man gunned down in October 2020 outside his home.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White sentenced Jaylen Isaiah Jordan, 21, for the death of 24-year-old Ja’von Phillips, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced in a news release. A jury on Dec. 4 found Jordan guilty of first-degree murder.

On Oct. 18, 2020, authorities responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots fired at Phillips’ home. Prosecutors said authorities arrived and Phillips dead with a gunshot wound in the back of the head.

Several witnesses told investigators they saw a burgundy sedan pull up to the scene shortly before they heard gunfire. Prosecutors said one witness saw a male get out of the sedan’s passenger side and fire five to seven gunshots at Phillips before getting back into the car and leaving the area.

Investigators later identified Jordan as the shooter, found evidence that placed Jordan in the area where the shooting occurred and discovered a message Jordan sent to his friend that referenced the murder, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

On Aug. 9, 2023, the Sacramento Probation Department booked Jordan at the Sacramento County Main Jail. That was the same day prosecutors charged Jordan in Phillips’ shooting death. Jail records show Jordan was 16 years old when the deadly shooting occurred.

Jordan remained in custody Friday afternoon at the jail awaiting a transfer to a prison.
