1 dead after domestic violence suspect fleeing police strikes 6 cars in Sacramento

Roadway fatality

A man died Saturday after a person struck six cars while fleeing police in the Greenhaven-Pocket area, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

At 10:15 a.m., officers responded to the 7300 block of Farm Dale Way after a woman called to say she was trying to retrieve belongings at a home there and believed a person she had accused last weekend of domestic violence may be present, Police Department spokesperson Officer Anthony Gamble said.

The suspect, identified by police as 33-year-old Daniel Cunningham of Sacramento, fled before officers arrived. Police said he was wanted for domestic violence in a June 1 incident and had an active felony warrant for being a parolee at large.

An officer spotted Cunningham driving nearby, Gamble said. When officers attempted a traffic stop using lights and sirens, Cunningham failed to yield and led them on a brief pursuit, police said. Officers lost sight of the vehicle, which then sped westbound on Florin Road.

Cunningham collided with six vehicles at the intersection of Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive, totaling those cars and his own, Gamble said. An adult male driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene by Sacramento Fire Department personnel.

The victim’s identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending family notification.

Authorities then arrested the suspect, who is expected to face charges related to felony pursuit, domestic violence and being a parolee at large, Gamble said.

California Highway Patrol will lead the investigation into the collision, while Sacramento police investigate the events leading up to it, according to Gamble. The westbound part of Florin Road is expected to be closed down for several more hours as authorities investigate, Gamble said.
