Man held on suspicion of trying to rape relative, Sacramento County deputies says

Bars from a jail cell frame a door being locked.

A 24-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of multiple felonies, including assault, battery and attempted rape after a family member said he attacked her at knifepoint, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Jail records show that the man was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday after the Wednesday night incident on Pasadena Avenue in Arden Arcade. Pending charges include felony counts of assault, sexual battery, threats to a person’s life, arson and burglary. He also faces misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment and of removing or disabling a cellphone.

Deputies responded to the scene after the victim, an adult woman, called the 911 emergency service about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi said in a news release.

As they attempted to secure the area, the man jumped over a fence and fled to a neighboring house, Gandhi said.

The neighbor escaped, but the man remained inside for about two hours, refusing to come out. At one point, he lit a fire inside the neighbor’s house with a torch, though he put it out himself, Gandhi said. The man was taken into custody about 8:30 p.m., Gandhi said.

Jail records show that the man is not currently eligible for bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
