Man barricaded inside downtown Sacramento apartment surrenders to police
A man who barricaded himself inside his downtown Sacramento apartment for hours early Wednesday has surrendered to police.
The five-hour ordeal ended just after 8 a.m., said Sacramento Police Department officials, more than five hours after the incident began.
A 911 hang up call from the 1100 block of 9th Street brought officers to the scene about 2:30 a.m., where two people were involved in a disturbance, said Sacramento Police Department officials. Officers were able to separate the two, but one fled back to an apartment where police said he barricaded himself with a knife.
Sacramento police officials said crisis negotiators and a police tactical team were called to get the man to surrender to officers, officials said in a 5:35 a.m. update.
Police were continuing to talk with the barricaded man as the ordeal reached five hours about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Minutes later, police tactical officers launched tear gas into the apartment to force the man out of the building, Sacramento Police Department officials told reporters.
The man was taken from the building on a stretcher, officials said, and transported to a hospital for evaluation.
