Authorities are investigating a suspicious death which might involve foul play after human remains were found Tuesday evening at a Northern California home.

As part of an ongoing investigation, officers served a search warrant about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday at the home in the 600 block of Mitchell Avenue, the Oroville Police Department said Wednesday afternoon in a news release.

The Oroville home is located just east of Highway 70, in the Butte County city about 70 miles north of Sacramento.

Due to the nature of the investigation, police said authorities used a detection K-9 from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services along with help from the California Department of Justice and the Butte County Coroner’s Office.

The specialized detection K-9 searched the property and alerted investigators, directing their attention to an isolated area of the home. Police said officers examine the location and discovered human remains.

This case is being investigated “as a suspicious death involving potential foul play,” police said.

“Detectives are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” according to the police news release. “At this time, the victim’s identity is being withheld.”

A suspect connected to the death investigation was custody on unrelated felony charges. Police said they will release the suspect’s name at a later date, and there was no ongoing threat to the public. The Police Department did not release any further details about the investigation.

Investigators asked anyone with information relevant to this case to call the Police Department at 530-538-2444.
