One person died and two others were hospitalized Thursday after a car was involved in a single-vehicle crash and overturned in the middle of a Sacramento shopping center.

The crash was reported along the La Riviera Drive off-ramp from the northbound lanes of Watt Avenue, California Highway Patrol online dispatch records show.

The blue Hyundai came to rest on its roof in the shopping center parking lot in the 8700 block of La Riviera Drive just east of Watt Avenue and south of the American River. Firefighters responded to the reported crash and found the overturned car with three people inside, said Capt. Mark Nunez, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Nunez said the firefighters quickly initiated rescue operations and freed two of the occupants from the car. He said one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two people injured in the crash were taken to a hospital for further medical evaluation. Nunez said he did not have any further information about their conditions.

No other vehicles appeared to have been involved in the crash, and damage to the surrounding area was limited to the parking lot, Nunez said.

The Metro Fire spokesperson said it was unclear to authorities whether the driver of the Hyundai had experienced a medical emergency before the crash. The CHP was investigating the fatal crash.
