Man accused of Folsom High threats arrested again after he’s seen at another school
A Folsom man facing felony charges for allegedly directing threats at the Folsom High School campus in late September was arrested again after walking onto an elementary school campus Monday afternoon.
Folsom police arrested 53-year-old Curt Michael Taras of Folsom for violating a court order issued after the Sept. 24 incident at the high school during which he assessed potential “sniper points” while student-athletes practiced on the Folsom High campus.
Taras was free on bail when he was seen again just after 2 p.m. outside Sandra J. Gallardo Elementary School in the 700 block of Russi Road in Folsom. No students were at the elementary school Monday, though people were on campus for other activities, said Folsom Police Department officials.
Officers who searched the Gallardo campus could not find the man and determined he was no longer on the property. Police would later learn that the man had been at the school and arrested him for violating the court order. Taras was not armed at the time of his arrest, police said.
Taras was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail; jail records show he was released from custody late Monday.
In the September incident at Folsom High School, officers found the man carrying a knife. A subsequent search of his vehicle uncovered an unspecified firearm and a high-capacity magazine.
Taras was arrested and booked into Sacramento County Main Jail after the Folsom High incident on suspicion of multiple felony charges, including making criminal threats, possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle, possessing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, and bringing a knife onto school grounds. He also faced misdemeanor counts of possessing a high-capacity magazine and violating a court order.
Taras faces a preliminary hearing on those charges Oct. 17 in Sacramento Superior Court.
In response to Monday’s incident, the Folsom Police Department issued a public safety update to address community concerns and correct online misinformation.
“We hear your concerns about school safety, and we want you to know we’re taking action,” the department said in a statement. “Extra officers have been deployed to our schools, school resource officers continue their regular presence, and we’re working closely with (Folsom Cordova Unified School District) to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff.”
