Jurors convict man of attempted murder in 2021 knife attack on Rancho Cordova parents
A Sacramento County man whose brutal 2021 knife attack on his Rancho Cordova parents left the couple fighting for their lives was convicted Thursday of attempted murder in Sacramento Superior Court, prosecutors said.
Hamdi Hussam Bazyan, 36, now faces a maximum sentence of 28 years and four months in state prison after jurors found him guilty of two counts of attempted murder in the Dec. 26, 2021, stabbings of his mother and father, and animal cruelty in the stabbing of their family cat.
Jurors also returned guilty verdicts convicting Bazyan of false imprisonment, false imprisonment of an elder person as well as two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Jury also found true allegations that Bazyan caused great bodily injury and used a knife in the attacks.
Prosecutors said Bazyan’s parents called authorities to report their son’s erratic behavior. Bazyan left the Rancho Cordova home before law enforcement arrived, but later returned after officers left the home. Bazyan grabbed three large knives, said the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, and forced his parents into a bedroom where he pummeled the pair with his fists and a cane.
Prosecutors at trial said Bazyan then set upon the family cat. He stabbed the animal nine times and attempted to smother it before resuming the attack on his parents, stabbing his mother in the torso. When Bazyan’s father tried to stop their son’s attack, Bazyan stabbed him repeatedly, according to the D.A.’s office.
Bazyan’s mother fled to a neighbor’s home and called police. Both the mother and father survived the attack.
Bazyan also fled ahead of onrushing police but was captured a short time later on the American River shore near the American River Bridge.
Bazyan remains held without bail at Sacramento County Main Jail. Sentencing is set for Jan. 23 before Sacramento Superior Court Judge Allison Williams.
