Domestic violence suspect takes own life after firing at Sacramento deputies

Police tape at crime scene

A man who opened fire on Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies while fleeing a domestic violence call early Monday took his own life hours later, authorities said.

The unidentified individual shot themselves once just after 6 a.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 47th Avenue in the Lemon Hill neighborhood, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies had deployed flash bangs and less-lethal rounds moments before the self-inflicted gunshot.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the person’s name once next of kin are notified.

The incident began shortly before 1 a.m., when deputies responding to a domestic violence report near 39th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard came under fire. No deputies were injured and they did not return fire. A perimeter was established, covering several blocks in both directions.

Crisis negotiators engaged the person by phone for several hours, attempting to persuade them to surrender.

Road closures in the area were lifted shortly after 6 a.m.
