Caretaker arrested after Sacramento sheriff’s standoff, threats to woman
A live-in caretaker who barricaded himself Sunday inside his 77-year-old charge’s Arden Arcade home after allegedly threatening her and triggering a standoff with Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies was in custody Monday.
Jesse James Halleib, 40, faces felony charges of elder abuse and kidnapping in the incident, which began about 11 a.m. at a residence on Marconi Avenue. The woman was not injured, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said Halleib had been living in a shed on the woman’s property when he entered the home and threatened to assault her. The woman attempted to call 911, but Halleib cut off the call while she was speaking with dispatchers, according to a sheriff’s statement.
Deputies arriving at the home saw Halleib outside, but he ran back inside, grabbed the woman and pushed her out the door before locking himself inside, the Sheriff’s Office said. A sheriff’s dog was eventually sent in to subdue Halleib.
The man was treated at a hospital before he was taken to Sacramento County Main Jail. Video provided by the Sheriff’s Office shows a large wrapping around one leg where he was brought down by the canine.
Halleib was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, jail records showed. His arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday in Sacramento Superior Court.
