Protesters vandalize Sacramento federal building after ICE killing in Minneapolis
Investigators with the federal Department of Homeland Security are investigating reports of vandalism at a demonstration in downtown Sacramento that protested Wednesday’s killing of an unarmed woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, the Sacramento Police Department said.
The protest, which began at Fremont Park and included a march to the John E. Moss Federal Building on Capitol Mall, started with about 100 people at the park and another 25 at the federal building, but eventually drew about 200 people, said Officer Anthony Gamble, a spokesperson for the Police Department.
Sacramento police diverted traffic from N Street between Fifth and Sixth streets downtown as the march proceeded, Gamble said. He confirmed that a group of protesters pushed through a gate at the building, causing damage. A video posted by KCRA shows the group pushing its way in and also includes images of graffiti painted on the building.
There were no arrests, Gamble said. The incident is being investigated by the Federal Protective Service, an agency within the Department of Homeland Security, he said.
The protesters were responding to a call to action by the group NorCal Resist, which sends observers to document the Trump administration’s immigration sweeps, among other forms of activism.
The action was in response to the killing of Renee Nicole Good, 37, who was shot while in her vehicle by an ICE agent conducting arrests in a residential area of Minneapolis.
Federal officials said she had attempted to kill the agent with her car, but numerous videos of the scene do not appear to support that claim. Instead, the videos show her car blocking a road before backing up slightly to turn and then driving away.
NorCal Resist did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Bee.
