Woman shot near downtown Sacramento dies at hospital; police investigating

A woman who was shot early Thursday morning in Sacramento died at a hospital, police said.

Officers responded just after 1:15 a.m. to reports of a shooting near A Street and Ahern Street in the city’s River District, according to the Sacramento Police Department. Responding officers found the woman suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Firefighters transported the woman to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators have since taken over the investigation. No suspect information had been released, and the circumstances of the shooting remained under investigation.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the woman’s identity after next of kin were notified.
