Davis suspect fired on cop before being killed in San Jose shootout: police
A Davis man was killed after a series of carjackings in the Bay Area culminating in an exchange of gunfire with a San Jose police sergeant who was hospitalized after a bullet grazed his head, authorities said.
The close-range gunfight happened Wednesday with a carjacking suspect who was killed when shot and struck by a police SUV in downtown San Jose, authorities said. The nearly two-hour chase stretched from Hollister to San Jose, and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. San Jose police Chief Paul Joseph said at a news conference Thursday that the sergeant, who has 13 years of service with the department, suffered a skull fracture.
Joseph said that near the end of the incident, the suspect collided with a stopped vehicle near Notre Dame Avenue and West Julian Street. As the police sergeant arrived in pursuit, the suspect got out of the car and “charged” at him, Joseph said, immediately firing.
The sergeant was struck in the head as he arrived, Joseph said, but still managed to get out of his vehicle and return fire with another officer. The two circled the police vehicle, exchanging gunfire. The suspect briefly tried to take a police vehicle, then fled before he was shot seconds later by approaching officers.
The man was identified by Joseph as Mohamed Husien, 30, of Davis. Joseph said the sergeant was initially listed in critical condition but the Bay Area News Group, citing a law enforcement source with knowledge of the situation, reported that the sergeant was expected to be released from the hospital to recover at home.
“This was a battle for that sergeant’s life, unfolding in the middle of our city, in broad daylight, with members of the public in the crossfire,” Joseph said at Thursday’s news conference, adding “Under fire, wounded and under extreme stress, his training and resolve kicked in.”
Steve Slack, president of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, said in a statement that officers displayed “incredible bravery” as they ran toward gunfire and “ultimately eliminated the threat.” He said the injured sergeant remained in good spirits and that the union was supporting him and his family.
In a video of the shootout provided to the Bay Area News Group, Husien is seen getting out of a police vehicle in the middle of a San Jose intersection Wednesday afternoon as a group of officers surrounds the SUV and gunfire rings out.
The shooting intensifies a person, identified as Husien, emerges from the driver’s seat of the police vehicle and runs a few dozen yards away before collapsing. About three seconds after the person has fallen to the ground, a second police vehicle enters the frame at high speed and drives over the person, a split second after they can be seen moving on the ground.
Dozens more gunshots ring out Husien can no longer be seen moving as police then approach him.
In the moments leading up to the video, a San Jose police sergeant used his vehicle to block the suspect, who was in a white car, a law enforcement source told the Bay Area News Group. The source, who was not authorized to speak, said the suspect then got out of the car, ran up to the sergeant’s vehicle and opened fire, wounding the sergeant.
