Man who crashed pickup into kids at Truckee Safeway to face mental evaluation

A Nevada County judge has suspended criminal proceedings against the man who allegedly slammed his truck into youth baseball players who were fundraising outside a Truckee Safeway supermarket to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

Jonathan Noel Maurer, 49, appeared Tuesday in Nevada Superior Court where he faces eight counts of attempted murder, along with multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon and allegations of causing great bodily injury in the Feb. 7 attack outside the supermarket.

Maurer remains in Nevada County custody at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City as he awaits the court-ordered competency evaluation, the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Prosecutors said Maurer, of Coalinga in Fresno County, deliberately drove his pickup truck into the children and adults. The under-12 Tahoe Titans youth baseball club was selling jerky to raise funds for a trip to Cooperstown, New York, when they were struck.

“The allegations that this act was intentional and directed at kids is hard to comprehend,” Nevada County District Attorney Jesse Wilson said in a statement posted to social media, following the incident.

Maurer, who authorities said has an extensive criminal history, was on post-release community supervision at the time of the incident.
