Placer County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 32-year-old man after they found an “active pipe bomb” and meth in his vehicle Tuesday morning during a traffic stop, authorities said.

A deputy initiated the traffic stop near Industrial Avenue in a commercial area just outside city limits, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.

“The deputy immediately noticed a suspicious metal pipe with end caps and a fuse sitting on the vehicle’s center console,” sheriff’s officials wrote in the post.

A Sheriff’s Office explosive ordnance disposal team responded to the scene and secured the device, which was “determined to be an active pipe bomb,” authorities wrote.

Further search of the suspect’s vehicle also unearthed suspected methamphetamine, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The 32-year-old suspect was arrested and booked into the South Placer Jail on numerous charges related to possession of an explosive device, possession of controlled substances and multiple outstanding warrants.

Online jail records show the man was booked into the jail at 4:10 a.m. His bail was set at $590,000, the Sheriff’s Office said.
