Two Yuba County sheriff’s deputies fired their weapons at a kidnapping suspect Thursday afternoon during a vehicle pursuit, but the man was not hit and continued to flee until he was bitten by a police dog and taken into custody.

The 46-year-old Oroville man, who was arrested Thursday, was receiving medical treatment for the injuries he suffered, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release. He was expected to be booked into the Yuba County Jail once he’s medically cleared.

Sheriff’s officials said no law enforcement officers or bystanders were injured in the incident.

About 12:20 p.m. near Nuestro and Tierra Buena roads just north of Yuba City, Sutter deputies tried to pull over a GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle associated with the man, who was wanted on a Butte County warrant alleging kidnapping and lewd acts with a child.

Yuba sheriff’s officials said the suspect was considered armed and dangerous, and he failed to pull over. The pursuit ensued and went through multiple jurisdictions, including portions of Sutter, Butte and Yuba counties.

Deputies from Sutter and Yuba counties were involved in the vehicle pursuit, along with California Highway Patrol officers from the Yuba-Sutter and Oroville offices. CHP helicopters also joined the pursuit, which continued from Marysville to Brownsville where the shooting occurred.

Authorities said the suspect drove toward a Dollar General store in Brownsville and sped over a curb to avoid a spike strip deployed to disable the SUV’s tires.

The suspect then drove toward Yuba deputies who were outside their patrol vehicles in the parking lot, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Two deputies fired their department-issued guns at the suspect, according to the Sheriff’s Office, but the rounds struck the SUV and not the suspect.

The suspect continued fleeing until the pursuit ended in a wooded area off New York Flat Road in Forbestown. The suspect then abandoned the SUV and hid, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies located the suspect with a Yuba Sheriff’s Office K-9, which bit him before he was apprehended, authorities said.

The Yuba-Sutter Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Team, a bi-county task force, was investigating the shooting.
