Detectives this week arrested an Olivehurst man who faces a charge of murder in connection with the fentanyl overdose death last year of an inmate at the Yuba County Jail.

Marcus Aaron Daniels, 39, was arrested and booked Monday at the Yuba County Jail, the same detention facility where the inmate died in September. Jail records show Daniels’ bail amount was set at $1.05 million.

The inmate’s death occurred Sept. 8. Medics responded to the inmate who was experiencing a medical emergency. The inmate was pronounced dead at the scene, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday in a news release.

Sheriff’s detectives took over the inmate death investigation. Sheriff’s officials said an autopsy and toxicology determined the inmate’s cause of death was a fentanyl overdose.

Detectives later found evidence that indicated Daniels was “responsible for introducing” the fentanyl that led to the inmate’s death, sheriff’s officials said in the news release announcing the arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office declined to release any further details about the investigation, including the name of the inmate who died eight months ago at the jail or whether Daniels was an inmate at the jail around the time of last year’s fentanyl death.

The Appeal-Democrat newspaper reported in a police blotter article last summer that Daniels was arrested on July 11 on suspicion of drug possession and violating parole, and he was booked then at the Yuba County Jail.

The Yuba County District Attorney’s Office last week filed a criminal complaint that charged Daniels with murder in last year’s death of the inmate. Daniels, who remained in custody Tuesday at the jail, is scheduled to appear for his arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon in Yuba Superior Court.

Fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid. As little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal depending on a person’s body size, tolerance and past usage, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Drug dealers mix fentanyl, because of its potency and low cost, with other drugs including heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine, which increases the likelihood of a fatal dose, according to the DEA. It’s possible for someone to take a pill without knowing it contains fentanyl or whether it contains a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Authorities say fentanyl can be sold as pills with some online dealers claiming the pills are Xanax, Percocet and oxycodone. Fentanyl also can come in powder and vape pens.
