A Sacramento County sheriff’s detective was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence after a six-vehicle crash in Rancho Cordova.

Richard Hamilton was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury, according to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office booking records.

The crash was reported about 4:15 p.m. at Douglas Road and Sunrise Boulevard. Hamilton was driving an unmarked county vehicle while off duty when it was involved in the collision, which resulted in minor injuries, according to radio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.

Scanner traffic indicated the crash temporarily closed lanes at Sunrise Boulevard Douglas Road. One person was taken by ambulance with minor back pain, according to dispatch calls.

Hamilton was later released from custody, jail records show. It was unclear Wednesday when he would be arraigned.

Sgt. Edward Igoe, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, declined to name the deputy but said he was placed on administrative leave pending criminal and internal investigations.

Hamilton has worked for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office since at least 2014, according to state payroll records.

Igoe said the Sheriff’s Office sends its sincere apologies to the community.

“This conduct does not reflect the values or standards of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office,” he said.
